ABIX Summary
Australian Taxation Office data show a significant number of Australians pay the higher Medicare levy due to not having private health cover. In 2005, there were over 374,000 such cases, with a median $A610 per person payable. Tax experts recommend that consumers take out private health insurance policies as soon as they move into the relevant tax brackets. These are $A50,000 for singles, $A100,000 for married people and an extra $A1,500 for each dependent child. A surcharge of 1% of taxable income is levied on those who are without private health insurance.
