Taxes: happily no longer one of life's certainties

Thu Sep 13 2007

The Australian Financial Review --- Page: 66 : 13 September 2007
Original article by Jill Margo

LexisNexis Summary
The Australian Government has changed superannuation laws to help terminally ill people. Christina Fiddimore lobbied to access her super without a tax penalty. On 11 September 2007, Revenue Minister Peter Dutton announced that people with a terminal illness who access super before the age of 60 will be exempt from tax on the lump-sum benefit. Kenneth Gray, from law firm Baker & McKenzie, says he has been lobbying on this issue for a year. He has welcomed the immediate change, but says that some issues will have to be resolved.
