Tax office to share records with law

Legislation will be introduced allowing greater access to tax records by Australian law enforcement agencies. The first phase, announced by the Acting Treasurer, Peter Dutton, will be to allow access by Australia's largest investigation into tax evasion. Dutton stressed that any tax records would only released if there were strong public interest needs, which he identified as organised crime and terrorism. The Law Society of New South Wales believes that this legislation would discourage some people from being honest on their tax returns.
