LexisNexis Summary
Thomson Financial's data show that $US142.7bn ($A173bn) worth of mergers and acquisitions have been announced in Australia so far in 2007. This compares with $US87.2bn worth of such transactions for the same period in 2006. Leveraged buy-out activity has risen sharply in 2007, with some $US17.9bn worth of such deals in the year to date, up from $US4.3bn during the first eight months of 2006. However, some analysts believe that there will be fewer private equity deals due to the flow-on effects of the problems in the US sub-prime mortgage market on credit markets.
