ABIX Summary
Australian rents rose 1.6 per cent in the June 2007 quarter, according to the latest CPI data. This was the largest quarterly growth since 1989. Real estate agents said rents had risen an average of between $A40 and $A50 a week in the previous year and that it was difficult to find any properties below $A300 a week. They noted the increases are not that great when averaged, as landlords had held down prices for several years. However some agents warned the rental shortage had been exaggerated and that if owners put up prices too much they may find it takes many months to lease the property.
