Australia is considered to be a world leader when it comes to investing in infrastructure. Australian superannuation funds have been investing in local infrastructure since the 1980s, and some funds have very high allocations to infrastructure, such as the $A6 billion Motor Trades Association of Australia Super Fund, which has a 42 per cent allocation to the asset class. European and Canadian super funds have also become involved in infrastructure investment, although US pension funds are yet to get involved in the sector to any extent. In the Australian corporate sector, Macquarie Bank and Babcock & Brown are prominent investors in offshore infrastructure assets.
