ABIX Summary
Australian Bureau of Statistics data show rental vacancy rates for houses and apartments declined from 1.6% to 1.36% in the final quarter of 2006. This was the lowest since records began in the late 1960s. The trend has prompted some economists to predict the Reserve Bank of Australia will increase interest rates as early as May 2007 to prevent rising inflation from impeding any recovery in the supply of housing.
