Rates fail to curb card use

ABIX Summary
The Reserve Bank of Australia released credit and charge card figures on 15 February 2007. Although monthly credit card repayments have risen to $A16.5 billion per month, outstanding balances have grown twice as fast, from $A38 billion in December 2006 to almost $A39 billion in January 2007. According to the Commonwealth Bank's CommSec analyst Martin Arnold, the good news is "more astute" use of cards, such as fewer cash advances.
