LexisNexis Summary

A Senate Economics Legislation Committee inquiry into bank fees will deliver its report without any public hearings being held. The committee examined laws giving the Australian Securities & Investments Commission more power to prevent banks charging substantial fees for processing dishonoured cheques or direct debits. Legislation introduced by Family First Party Australia senator, Steve Fielding, would allow banks to recoup the administration costs associated with such transactions only. Fielding said the committee's report cannot be conclusive in the absence of any public hearings.
