ABIX Summary
Economists believe that there may soon be an interest rate rise in Australia. They think that the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) board may raise interest rates when it meets on 3 April 2007 or shortly after that. Economic indicators for January 2007 showed that the Australian economy is growing very strongly. Economic growth will accelerate in the coming months at an annual rate of 4.8% and there is growing business and consumer confidence. The RBA is known to have a "hawkish" stance on inflation and may be tempted to raise interest rates well before the next general election, to be held in late 2007.
