Lower tax rates cut negative gearing appeal

Mon Feb 19 2007

The West Australian --- Page: 36 : 19 February 2007
Original article by Annette Sampson

ABIX Summary
Although many people consider negative gearing a great lurk of the Australian Taxation Office, it is not necessarily true. According to Phil Clinton, of Newell Palmer Securities, reduced income tax rates have eroded most of the benefits of negative gearing. Although gearing remains valuable to people in the top marginal tax rate of 46.5 per cent, since this applies to a small number of Australians earning taxable income above $A150,000, the overall value of negative gearing needs to be closely examined in 2007.
