ABIX Summary
Some 1,500 people have been migrating to Queensland from other states each week. The Australian Bureau of Statistics forecasts that by 2031, Victoria will be surpassed by Queensland as the nation's biggest state by population. New migrants contributed $A3.7 billion in payroll and property taxes to the state Budget in 2005-06. Problems such as infrastructure bottlenecks have raised questions about the Queensland Government's ability to handle fast population growth. The state needs more white-collar workers, and Premier Peter Beattie has advised unskilled workers to defer plans to migrate.
