ABIX Summary
The high cost of building in Australia is forcing many people to renovate their existing home rather than build another. Total renovations grew in 2006 for the first time in three years. In the December 2006 quarter renovation spending hit $A953m, up 6.9 per cent, according to the Housing Industry Association. It says almost 10,000 households renovated in the quarter, at an average cost of around $A96,000.
