LexisNexis Summary
There was a 0.8% increase in sales of new homes and units in Australia in October 2007, Housing Industry Association (HIA) figures show. Sales of detached dwellings in Victoria rose 28% in the month, compared with a 1.6% decline nationally. HIA chief economist, Harley Dale, said industry conditions improved compared with the previous year, but housing affordability is an issue. He said the Victorian result was positive but only marginally higher across the whole year. Australian Bureau of Statistics data has shown a 1.6% seasonally adjusted increase in residential construction in the September 2007 quarter.
