Economists see downside risks

Mon Jan 8 2007

The Australian Financial Review --- Page: 13 : 8 January 2007
Original article by Corinne Lim and Fleur Anderson

ABIX Summary
Most Australian economists expect official interests rates to remain unchanged in the first half of 2007. The quarterly survey of economists by "The Australian Financial Review" has found that just three of the 18 respondents believe that interest rates may be increased in the first quarter. Bill Evans of Westpac anticipates a rate rise in the first half of the year, although the ANZ Bank's Saul Eslake does not expect a rate rise before the federal election late in the year. Meanwhile, most economists expect GDP growth of 2.4 per cent in 2006-07.
