Bankcard, Australia's first credit card scheme, will stop operating by 31 December 2006. Bankcard holders are advised to check their last statement for any regular payments from their Bankcard and give the service provider the details of an alternative credit card. Bankcard was launched in 1974 as a joint venture between nine Australian banks. A shrinking cardholder base has led to the decision of the banks to shut down the service.
