LexisNexis Summary
Fast progress is being made on the removal of mortgage stamp tax in many Australian states. This is partly due to governments' desire to be perceived as taking action on high house prices. With certain exceptions, mortgage duty was eliminated in Victoria on 1 July 2004. For owner-occupied housing, the charge was removed in New South Wales (NSW) on 1 September 2007. However, for mortgages taken out in NSW by a company or as a loan extension, the stamp tax will not be lifted until 2009.
