ABIX Summary
People who make claims for work-related expenses can expect to come under scrutiny by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) in 2007. Such claims totalled almost $A12bn in 2004-05, and ATO figures show that 80 per cent of taxpayers make a claim for at least one work-related expense. Garry Addison of CPA Australia says people who fail to declare capital gains can also expect to be targeted. Property investors who claim tax deductions for rental properties will also be a focus for the ATO, with such deductions totalling $A21.8bn in 2004-05.
