Asian fortunes rise as greenback stays strong

Tue Apr 10 2007

The Australian Financial Review --- Page: 19 : 10 April 2007
No author supplied for original article

ABIX Summary
The Australian dollar was steady at $US0.8160 on 9 April 2007. The US dollar found support after encouraging data from the Department of Labor, which showed that the US unemployment rate fell to 4.4 per cent in March, which was lower than most analysts had expected. The positive economic data also bolstered Asian sharemarkets, with the benchmark indices in China, Singapore and South Korea rising to new highs. Sean Callow of Westpac says the Australian dollar should rise in coming weeks, due to the prospect of an interest rate rise in May.
