Affordability crisis feeds rent increases

Wed Aug 1 2007

The Australian Financial Review --- Page: S13 : 1 August 2007
Original article by Fleur Anderson

LexisNexis Summary
Commonwealth Bank senior economist, Michael Workman, expects that in 2007, housing rents will rise at the fastest rate since 1989. He also anticipates landlords will raise rents by up to a further seven per cent over the coming few years. A Commonwealth Bank analysis of housing commencements and population has identified New South Wales as a "conspicuous" area of weakness. Matthew Hassan, of Westpac Banking, has predicted the housing shortage will worsen before the situation starts to improve.
