Australian Treasurer, Peter Costello, announced the 2007-08 Budget on 8 May 2007, including $A2.1 billion for child care. Although the Australian Government has continued to argue that Australia has an adequate supply of child care services, the $A2.1 billion over five years is an attempt to address affordability concerns. The Family Minister, Mal Brough, has indicated that from 1 July 2007 the child care benefit will increase 13 per cent.
